Making themselves at home just outside the front door

I have this hazy sense that over the last 5 years, a large toad or two have been living here with us, and gradually moving their home base closer and closer.  I wouldn't call it domestication, unless you want to argue that they are training US.  For the last two years they have claimed two large pots on the stoop, just outside the front door.
