Natural History Illustrators

The search engine Google posted a decorative image today to celebrate the birthday of John James Audubon (1785-1851). Natural history illustration has been on my mind recently because I'm reading a biography of Maria Sibylla Merian (1647-1717. German illustrator who specialized in the life cycles of insects, and went off to South America at the creaky age of fifty-something to study them.
