An "Allotment" - Resistance Garden!!
In media res. FLEA BEETLES! Sez Chloe, Brassicas - eggplant, broccoli, radishes.
The radish seeds FINALLY came up (2weeks plus?). No sooner did they break out, than they were completely mobbed by a hoard of tiny black bugs. Saturday the 29th, I ran over early, hiked in, and sprinkled diatomaceous earth all down each row.
Wednesday (yesterday), 4 days later, 2 April, went back. There were just a few survivors, struggling. Little pairs of seed leaves riddled with holes. :(. Only spotted a few beetles, but then what was left for them to bother with?! Put in a new batch of seeds.
Met another neighbor: Carol with a "C". She has 2 beds. Swiss chard in one so far, and some flowers in the other. "I have a dream of having a roadside flower stand," she says. "I want to spread joy." She is meeting someone this week, and getting a big load of something I was not familiar with. I couldn't picture what it is, so I contented myself with trading contact info and deciding I would just wait and see. All things in the fullness of time. Someone from the NM Dahlia Society has been by. Their weed cloth is off and the bed hastily prepared (big sloppy clumps, but loose).
Unexpected joy: a broken line of asparagus spears!
Irritating: a big fat footprint in our bed, right near the spot where there are bricks to step on. ?!
Currently: a few peas up, most of the spinach, perky little beets, struggling radishes. Onion starts are fine. Rabbits. Hm. We probably need to get some rabbit fencing. Bees continue to lap at the holes in the tea tape. Find that profoundly moving.
